background: obesity is associated with increased lipid peroxidation. it has also been suggested that risk of lipid peroxidation increases with increasing body iron stores. the aim of this study was to examine the association of body iron status with the concentration of plasma malondialdehyde (p-mda) as a marker of lipid peroxidation in obese and non-obese women. methods: in a case control study we investigated iron status by plasma ferritin, iron and total iron binding capacity (tibc) measurements and lipid peroxidation by plasma malondialdehyde (mda) levels measurements in 25 obese women and 25 non-obese women matched for age. results: plasma ferritin levels were significantly higher in obese groups compared with control groups ( p < 0.001). plasma tibc levels were not different in both groups and plasma iron levels were significantly higher in obese groups ( p < 0.05). in obese groups, plasma mda levels were significantly higher when compared with control groups ( p < 0.001). there were positive correlation between body mass index and plasma mda levels (r= 0.75, p < 0.0001). plasma mda levels were positively correlated with plasma iron levels (r= 0.26, p = 0.001) and plasma ferritin levels (r= 0.39, p < 0.0001) but not with tibc levels. conclusion: these findings suggest that obese menstruating women are at low risk of depleting iron stores and hence, increasing body iron elevates the chd risk by promoting the lipid peroxidation. therefore, iron fortification programs might be undesirable for such subjects.

Comparative Evaluation of Iron Deficiency among Obese and Non-obese Children

Background Obese children are at the risk of micronutrient deficiency especially iron deficiency. Given the importance of iron deficiency in this age group and considering the existing discrepancies, present study was performed with the aim of evaluating iron deficiency in obese children. Material and Method This study was conducted, in the form of a case-control study, on 100 children aged...

The metabolome profiling of obese and non-obese individuals: Metabolically healthy obese and unhealthy non-obese paradox

Objective(s): The molecular basis of “metabolically healthy obese” and “metabolically unhealthy non-obese” phenotypes is not fully understood. Our objective was to identify metabolite patterns differing in obese (metabolically healthy vs unhealthy (MHO vs MUHO)) and non-obese (metabolically healthy vs unhealthy (MHNO vs MUHNO)) individuals. Materials ...

Association between adiponectin and mediators of inflammation in obese women.

Low plasma levels of the anti-inflammatory factor adiponectin characterize obesity and insulin resistance. To elucidate the relationship between plasma levels of adiponectin, adiponectin gene expression in adipose tissue, and markers of inflammation, we obtained blood samples, anthropometric measures, and subcutaneous adipose tissue samples from 65 postmenopausal healthy women. Adiponectin plas...

iron profile and inflammatory status of overweight and obese women in sari, north of iran

background: several studies have suggested that obesity-related inflammation can lead to altered iron metabolism as well as higher rates of iron deficiency in obese than in normal-weight subjects. given that at a population level, premenopausal women are at higher risk of iron deficiency, the purpose of this study was to investigate iron and inflammatory status in young overweight and obese wom...

Iron status and dietary intakes of iron in normal-weight and obese young Mexican women.

INTRODUCTION Obesity is reported to be a predictor of iron deficiency. In Mexico, 45.5% of women older than 20 years have obesity, and the prevalence of anemia is 10.2% in women 20 to 29 years. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relation between body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (% BF), dietary intakes and iron status of healthy normal-weight and obese young women. METHODS A total of ...
